Nicole Gaines-Phelps Sworn-In as Superior Court Judge

On April 6, 2017, Delta Upsilon Omega Member, Judge Nicole Gaines-Phelps was sworn in as Superior Court Judge in King County, Washington (Seattle). She is the first African American to win an open seat and be sworn in for Superior Court in the state of Washington. Judge Gaines-Phelps has been an attorney for over 20 years, serving in both the private and public sectors including eight years as an Administrative Law Judge for the State of Washington. She has been very active in the minor bar association community, serving as the president of the Loren Miller Bar Association (a bar association serving predominantly African-American attorneys and law students) from 2010 – 2012. Under her leadership, the Taskforce on Race and Washington’s Criminal Justice System was created to address disparaging racial remarks made by affluent and high ranking members of Washington State Supreme Court.
